July Update

In just a few months since our launch in April, our GreenConnect team has been bustling with activities across the Loddon-Mallee region, creating enriching experiences for carers and people with dementia. From serene walks in native nurseries to lively cultural outings and peaceful lakeside lunches, we’ve been dedicated to immersing our participants in the natural beauty and vibrant community spirit that our region has to offer.

Our unique approach to respite care focuses on nature-based activities and experiences, providing a refreshing alternative to traditional aged care settings. By fostering environments that are safe, inclusive, and filled with the wonders of nature, we aim to enhance the wellbeing of both carers and those they support. Each outing is a step towards creating more accessible and enjoyable opportunities for those living with dementia and their carers.

We’ve seen a tremendous response to our diverse range of activities. Participants have enjoyed everything from exploring local wildlife sanctuaries and botanical gardens to engaging in creative art sessions and relaxing day trips. These experiences are not only about enjoyment but also about fostering a sense of belonging and community among our participants.

Our dedicated team has worked tirelessly to ensure every event is a memorable and uplifting experience. Their commitment to creating enriching and inclusive activities has been the heart and soul of GreenConnect.

Spotlight on Mildura: Meet Kaye Matthews

This month, we shine the spotlight on GreenConnect in Mildura and our dedicated Respite Care Coordinator, Kaye Matthews. Kaye’s passion lies in fostering meaningful connections for individuals with dementia and their carers. With a background in community engagement and event planning, Kaye is committed to making the world more accessible and welcoming for those with dementia.

“A diagnosis of dementia changes things but life goes on. Our goal is to create accessible and enjoyable experiences for people with dementia,” says Kaye. “Through our nature-based activities, we aim to enhance connectivity and friendship among our participants.”

Under Kaye’s leadership, GreenConnect in Sunraysia has organised several successful events, including visits to Benetook Farm, the Australian Inland Botanic Gardens, a horse therapy farm, Fossey’s Distillery, Woodies Gem Shop, the Riverfront Art Gallery and the Garden of Hope in Cabarita, as well as Dinner Under the Vines in Irymple and various local cafes and accommodations.

For those interested in joining our activities or learning more about the Mildura project, Kaye is always happy to chat and provide further information.

Introducing Our Business Assessment and Certification Team

We are delighted to introduce Kyle Laver and Eric Luu, Occupational Therapy students from La Trobe University who have recently joined GreenConnect. They are integral members of the newly formed Business Assessment and Certification Team, led by Project Facilitator, Jane McLean. Jane brings extensive expertise in business operations and quality assurance, ensuring the program’s success and impact.

Phase 1: Investigative Research

Under Jane’s skilled leadership, the team is conducting a thorough investigation into the services available within the Loddon-Mallee region for people with dementia and their carers. This involves examining current activities, accommodation and in-home support services. We anticipate completing this detailed research phase by the end of August 2024.

  • Define best practices: Establish guidelines for the safe, effective and enjoyable delivery of Respite Tourism services tailored specifically for people with dementia.

  • Develop a Certification blueprint: Create a comprehensive framework for future business Assessment and GreenConnect Certification, leveraging Jane’s extensive experience in quality assurance.

We are excited to share our journey and the valuable insights we gain as we strive to enhance the quality of life for people with dementia and their carers.

Collaborative Opportunities and New Partnerships

Since the GreenConnect Dementia Respite Project launch, we’ve received enthusiastic interest from key industry stakeholders, including the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged, Carers Victoria, and Elder Rights Advocacy. These organisations are keen to explore collaborative opportunities with the GreenConnect Dementia Respite Project.

We have several meetings lined up over the next month to discuss potential partnership collaborations that will enhance our services and support for the dementia community.

Embracing Diversity and Inclusivity

GreenConnect is committed to fostering an inclusive environment. We recently hosted our first activity with participants from the Bendigo & District Aboriginal Co-operative (BDAC), creating meaningful connections and planning future activities and overnight stays. We are also in discussions with Thorne Harbour Country to organise a retreat later this year.

Our dedication extends to supporting diverse groups, including First Nations communities, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) groups, and the LGBTIQA+ community.

Highlights from the National Dementia Conference

In June, Marg Rae, our CarerConnect Coordinator, co-presented with Dr Nan Yuu of My Dementia Companion at the National Dementia Conference. They highlighted the GreenConnect Dementia Respite Project, emphasising how it fills gaps in current respite services and day activities.

Marg shared, “It was a privilege as a carer to present on this wonderful GreenConnect Project. Our initiative is dedicated to enhancing both short and long-term respite services.”
