Exploring Art and Nature: A Memorable Outing with GreenConnect at Werrimull Silo Art and Lake Cullulleraine

Under a clear blue sky and a cool winter breeze, participants of GreenConnect Mildura embarked on a picturesque bus trip to Werrimull and Lake Cullulleraine, experiencing a day filled with nature, art, and newfound friendships.

Journey Begins at Mildura Wharf

The day commenced with sixteen participants, including six people with dementia, seven carers, three Care Friends, two children of a younger onset dementia participant, along with the Mildura Respite Care Coordinator Kaye Matthews and their cheerful bus driver, Andy, gathering at Mildura Wharf. The 62km journey began with Andy, a local, and Kaye sharing interesting details of local history, including plans for Werrimull’s upcoming 2025 Centenary celebration.

Discovering Werrimull’s Rich History and Art

Arriving at Werrimull, the group first visited the Millewa Memorial Wall, paying homage to local community members who served in World War 2 and the Korean War amidst the tranquil Pioneer Forest. Nearby, vibrant artworks adorned grain field bins and the towering GrainCorp Silos, showcasing local flora and fauna such as Budgerigars, Major Mitchell Cockatoos, and Emus, painted by talented local artists in 2023. A brief tour through Werrimull highlighted local landmarks like the Kinda-Year 12 schools, Catholic Church, and more, offering glimpses into rural life.

Lakeside Lunch and Musical Interlude

A scenic drive along Werrimull North Road, flanked by emerging wheat crops, led the group to Lake Cullulleraine’s peaceful shores. Here, at the “Tranquil Waters” Community room, participants savoured a hearty lunch of roast chicken, lamb, winter vegetables, and indulgent desserts, including self-saucing pudding and dairy-free banana ice-cream. The ambiance was enhanced by live music as Andy and a carer entertained everyone with familiar tunes on the old piano, prompting a delightful sing-along.

Exploring Lake Cullulleraine and Looking Ahead

After lunch, a leisurely stroll along the lake’s edge offered serene views and a perfect backdrop for group photos. A drive-by tour of the local yacht club, football ovals, and Millewa Landcare Office completed the day’s itinerary, leaving participants eager for future adventures.

Reflections and Future Plans

Upon returning to Mildura, participants enthusiastically completed satisfaction surveys, echoing sentiments of joy and appreciation for the day’s experiences. Comments ranged from “I loved seeing new places” to “Such a lovely day; I wouldn't change a thing.” Conversations buzzed with anticipation about future outings, reflecting the success of the trip in fostering community spirit and creating lasting memories.
