GreenConnect Mildura Participants Enjoy a Scenic Day Out with Murray Offroad Adventures
A Picturesque Start: Morning Tea Under the Almond Blossoms
Participants in the GreenConnect Dementia Respite Project in Mildura recently embarked on a delightful day trip, thanks to the hospitality of Murray Offroad Adventures. The outing, which blended the beauty of almond blossoms with a serene lunch on a Murray River sandbar, provided a refreshing escape for all involved.
The group, consisting of four people with dementia, four carers, a Care friend, and the Mildura Respite Care Coordinator, gathered at the Mildura Wharf at 9:45am. They boarded a 12-seater bus operated by Peter and Jeanie Kelly of Murray Offroad Adventures and began a 20-minute journey through the lush agricultural landscapes of the region, heading towards a sprawling almond farm in full bloom.
Upon arrival, participants were treated to a delightful morning tea under a canopy of white and pink almond blossoms. The Kellys, who doubled as tour guides and hosts, served up a selection of homemade treats, including fruit cake, Anzac biscuits, ginger biscuits, and local citrus fruit. Paired with steaming mugs of tea and coffee, the morning tea was a hit, enjoyed amidst the stunning contrast of blue skies and vibrant blossoms.
Exploring the Murray River: Lunch on Policeman’s Bend Sandbar
After their morning refreshment, the group continued their journey to Nangiloc, where they ventured off-road to reach the tranquil Policeman’s Bend sandbar on the Murray River. Here, participants were able to stretch their legs, take in the natural surroundings, and gather dry leaf matter and bark for a small fire, expertly lit by the Care friend. The fire added a cozy ambiance and provided the perfect opportunity for everyone to toast marshmallows – a first-time experience for some.
As the group mingled, walked along the riverbank, and made new friends, a hearty lunch was prepared. The spread included fresh bread rolls, a variety of salads, and meats for participants to create their own sandwiches, as well as more fruit and the same delicious cakes and biscuits from morning tea.
A Scenic Return Journey: Majestic River Gums and Wildflowers
After lunch, it was time to pack up and extinguish the fire before boarding the bus for the return journey. The Kellys, who are well-acquainted with the local river tracks, chose an alternate route home that offered additional scenic views. Along the way, participants marveled at the towering 300-year-old river red gums, with their massive trunks providing shelter for five species of bats, and the early blooms of yellow paper daisies.
Positive Feedback: A Day to Remember
Feedback from the day was overwhelmingly positive. Participants expressed their gratitude for the unique experience, with comments such as “Such a lovely day,” “We have never been to this part of Sunraysia,” and “The almond blossom was so beautiful, thank you to the property owners for giving us access.” Others appreciated the thoughtful touches, like the campfire and the opportunity to toast marshmallows, while many simply enjoyed the chance to connect with nature and socialise in a relaxed setting.
For some, the day out was a rare opportunity to explore beyond their usual surroundings. “Our social life has diminished with each year of this hideous disease, so days like today are very special,” shared one participant. The consensus among the group was clear: no improvements were needed to enhance the experience – everything was just perfect.
Looking Ahead: More Excursions to Come
The success of this outing highlights the importance of community partnerships in providing enriching experiences for those living with dementia. GreenConnect Dementia Respite extends its heartfelt thanks to Murray Offroad Adventures for their generosity and to the Gill Estate for allowing access to their beautiful almond blossom trees.
This day trip will be remembered fondly by all who attended, and plans for future outings are eagerly anticipated.
