Introducing the Jin Lab Harvest Initiative: Cultivating Community and Hope

As the GreenConnect Dementia Respite official launch at the Atisha Centre on the outskirts of Bendigo drew near, GreenConnect Project Manager, Sandra Slatter, and a dedicated team of participants from GreenConnect, WISE Employment, and Atisha Centre volunteers were hard at work, bringing the garden to life.

Under monk Thupten Chodak’s guidance, the team were busy constructing essential infrastructure, including bridges, ramps and wicking beds, generously provided and installed by WISE Employment. Meanwhile, the GreenConnect team and Atisha Centre volunteers have been diligently revitalising the garden, from growing seeds and propagating plants to creating art installations and designing signage.

“The garden project is not just about plants; it's about transforming communities,” explained Chodak. “Through sustainable practices and employment opportunities, we aim to bridge the gap between garden and fork, nurturing not just plants but also the lives of those involved.”

The project, known as the Jin Lab Harvest Initiative, embodies this vision of transformation and inclusivity. Inspired by His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s definition of ‘blessing,’ Jin Lab translates to ‘magnificent potential to transform’. With herb beds, wicking beds, fruit trees and a vegetable garden already established, the garden serves as a vibrant hub for community engagement and growth.

“Our Garden to Fork Project at the Atisha Centre is in full swing,” says Sandra Slatter. “Every Friday, from 10:00am to 1:00pm, we create a dementia-inclusive space where everyone can flourish.”

Indeed, the garden has become more than just a place to grow plants, it's a sanctuary for connection and joy. As participants work side by side, they embrace the beauty of diversity and inclusion, welcoming individuals of all abilities with open arms.

“After a morning of laughter and growth, we gather for a wholesome lunch, celebrating our accomplishments and the bonds we’ve cultivated,” said Sandra. “It’s a time to savour the fruits of our labour and cherish each other's company.”

Sandra and the team invite the community to join them on this transformative journey. “Join us every Friday as we sow the seeds of kindness and understanding in our community garden. Together, we can cultivate hope, empowerment, and a brighter future for all,” she said.
