Exploring Kooyoora State Park: A Cultural Journey

Pamela and Kevin Aspinall, accompanied by other carers and people with dementia, recently embarked on a long-awaited cultural tour to Kooyoora State Park. The tour was offered as an activity with the recently launched GreenConnect Dementia Respite Project. Despite a previous postponement due to weather concerns, anticipation ran high as the group set out for an adventure into the heart of Dja Dja Wurrung country.

“Kevin and I were eagerly anticipating this tour. Our journeys with GreenConnect Dementia Respite continue to lead us to new and exciting places.” said Pamela.

Joined by GreenConnect’s Project Manager, Sandra Slatter, and her granddaughter Pannika, the Aspinalls set out on a scenic drive to Kooyoora State Park, with Sandra providing insights into upcoming projects. “Building friendships and forging new connections is an integral part of our journey. Sitting at home would be a sad option for both of us,” said Pamela.

The day began with a familiar ritual of indulging in coffee and pastries at Bridgewater Bakery, setting the tone for what promised to be an enriching experience. Upon arrival at the meeting point, the group was greeted by their guides, Sharni and Kyrun, whose warmth and enthusiasm immediately set a positive tone for the day ahead.

Venturing into Kooyoora State Park, the landscape transformed into a breathtaking vista of granite boulders and soaring escarpments. “The Ancient Traditions of Djaara continue to thrive in this land and highlight the deep cultural significance of the area,” explained Pamela.

Led by passionate guides, the group delved into the rich history and customs of the Dja Dja Wurrung people. The group was welcomed with a traditional Smoking Ceremony, honouring the custodians of the land and setting the stage for a journey through time. “We explored significant landscapes and learned about bush tucker and traditional land use.Our guides’ enthusiasm for their ‘dream job’ was palpable,” said Pamela.

Despite some mobility challenges, the team navigated the terrain with ease, with plans underway to create more accessible pathways in the future. “We climbed to the Melville Caves, marvelling at the far-reaching views,” Pamela shared. “The tour offered a glimpse into the land’s ancient past and its enduring cultural significance.”

As they farewelled Kooyoora State Park, Pamela and Kevin carried with them a deeper understanding of Indigenous culture and a profound appreciation for the natural beauty of the land.

Pamela Aspinall, a resident of Bendigo, fulfils the crucial role of caregiver for her husband Kevin, who was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
