Celebrating the Season with a Murray River Cruise
GreenConnect Dementia Respite participants and staff, Mildura Men’s Shed volunteers and clients, the Mildura Dementia Australia Support Specialist, the GreenConnect Respite Care Coordinator, the Carer Support Facilitator, Care Friends, and the CEO of Princes Court Limited recently came together for a memorable Murray River cruise aboard the Mildura Cruises houseboat. This special gathering celebrated the end of 2024 with festive cheer and marked the final event of the year.
A Day on the Mighty Murray River
The morning began with a warm welcome as participants arrived at the mooring site, greeted by the helpful volunteers from the Mildura Men’s Shed. Once everyone was safely aboard, the crew and staff provided a thorough safety briefing before embarking on the cruise. The leisurely journey upstream offered participants a chance to unwind, enjoy the scenic river views, and form new connections. Conversation and laughter filled the boat as participants shared stories and experiences, creating a lively and inclusive atmosphere.
A Festive Welcome Aboard
Onboard, the group was greeted by Dementia Australia Support Specialist Bertilla Campbell and GreenConnect Respite Care Coordinator Kaye Matthews. The boat had been beautifully decorated the night before, radiating a festive spirit. Those new to the group commented on how welcomed and included they felt, further adding to the joy of the occasion.
A Delicious Morning Tea
A delicious morning tea featuring fresh fruit, sandwiches, biscuits, and cake was served alongside freshly brewed coffee and tea. The shared meal encouraged meaningful conversations and laughter, strengthening the bonds between participants and carers.
A Special Birthday Celebration
During the cruise, one of the carers celebrated her 80th birthday, and the group joined in singing “Happy Birthday” as she cut her cake. The festive cake was shared among all the guests, adding a heartwarming and celebratory touch to the day.
A Relaxing and Scenic Cruise
As the houseboat gently cruised along the Murray River, the serene movement and picturesque surroundings provided a soothing experience for everyone. Pelicans and cormorants rested along the riverbanks, and whistling kites soared above in the clear, sunny sky. Participants appreciated the tranquil environment, enjoying the peaceful river views while building new friendships.
A Heartwarming Moment
One participant living with dementia shared a heartfelt speech, expressing gratitude for friendship, good health, and happiness in the coming festive season. Their words resonated deeply, and the group joined in exchanging well-wishes for a safe and joyful Christmas and New Year.
Looking Ahead
As the cruise came to an end, the group disembarked with smiles, full hearts, and a stronger sense of connection to one another. This meaningful event beautifully celebrated the holidays and marked the end of a fulfilling year of community, care, and shared experiences.
