A Beautiful Christmas Celebration at Buda Homestead

To round off a wonderful year, Bendigo GreenConnect participants enjoyed a special outing on 12th December 2024, with a tour of Buda, a historic homestead and garden in Castlemaine, followed by a delicious lunch at the nearby Campbells Creek.

A Morning of Discovery at Buda

On a beautiful summer morning, the group gathered under the deep veranda, shaded by the leafy, verdant grapevine, to begin their tour. Christine, a friendly and knowledgeable guide, welcomed participants warmly and led them through the impressive homestead.

Christine shared the fascinating history of the Leviny family, who lived in Buda from 1863 until the early 1980s. Ernest Leviny, a Hungarian-born jeweller and watchmaker, established this thriving home with his wife Bertha and their ten children. Over 118 years, the family’s creativity shaped the house and its extensive collection of art, sculpture, and textiles.

As the group moved through the home’s beautifully preserved rooms, they were transported to a bygone era, envisioning the vibrancy of life in Castlemaine during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Participants appreciated the opportunity to reflect on the history and craftsmanship preserved in the house, sparking thoughts about heritage and creativity.

Exploring the Mediterranean Garden

The group next ventured into Buda’s Mediterranean-style garden, a stunning three-acre space that showcases the resilience and ingenuity required to maintain a historic garden in Central Victoria’s challenging climate.

Participants admired original plantings, towering trees such as the Bunya Pine, and the charm of the bird aviary and garden ornaments crafted by the Leviny family. The garden’s winding paths and shady nooks invited contemplation and sparked inspiration among the group.

Many expressed awe at the garden’s survival, with Christine explaining how volunteers and the garden curator work tirelessly to maintain its historical integrity. Some participants noted they were eager to return for a more in-depth exploration of the hidden garden rooms.

Lunch at Five Flags Hotel

Following the tour, the group travelled to the nearby Five Flags Hotel in Campbells Creek for a leisurely lunch. It was a time for relaxation, reflection, and conversation about the day’s adventures.

The outing fostered a sense of connection and community, with participants sharing thoughts on the experience:

  • “That was really interesting, even though I know I won’t remember it.”

  • “A beautiful day, a lovely setting, a good informative guide and good food.”

  • “Enjoying the company and the outings with nice friends.”

  • “Buda House was interesting and able to be enjoyed by all. Dad seemed to enjoy himself – a wonderful day.”

  • “We really loved Buda and we’re looking forward to our next outing.”

Looking Ahead

As the day came to a close, everyone left feeling uplifted and grateful for the opportunity to experience such a memorable outing. The Bendigo GreenConnect participants look forward to more outings and shared experiences in the future.
