GreenConnect Dementia Respite Project Highly Commended at the 2024 Future of Ageing Conference

We are proud to share that the GreenConnect Dementia Respite Project received a Highly Commended award at the 2024 Future of Ageing Conference, held in Sydney on 29 August 2024. This recognition underscores our innovative approach to dementia respite care in the Loddon-Mallee region. Our project, which integrates nature-based activities and environments to support people living with dementia and their carers, was acknowledged for its forward-thinking approach and impact. We extend our gratitude to our dedicated consortium partners – Heathcote Health, The John Richards Centre for Rural Ageing, La Trobe University, Princes Court, Heathcote Dementia Alliance, and Rural Care Australia – for their commitment to transforming dementia care and improving wellbeing in our community.

Award-Winning Innovation in Dementia Care

We are deeply honoured that GreenConnect has been recognised for its innovation in the Health & Wellbeing category. Launched in April 2024, following its establishment phase in June 2023, this three-year pilot project is setting new standards in dementia respite care. By integrating nature-based activities, experiences, and accommodation within dementia-inclusive environments, GreenConnect is revolutionising the field.

A Collaborative Effort for Meaningful Change

Our success is a testament to the strength of our collaborative efforts. The consortium behind GreenConnect includes five dedicated organisations: Heathcote Health, The John Richards Centre for Rural Ageing, La Trobe University, Princes Court, Heathcote Dementia Alliance, and Rural Care Australia. Together, we are enhancing respite services for people living with dementia and their carers. This approach ensures that our methods are inclusive and reflect the diverse needs of our community, incorporating voices from First Nations, LGBTQIA+, and culturally diverse groups through our steering group representatives, including Bendigo & District Aboriginal Co-operative, Bendigo Health, Carers Victoria, Centre for Cultural Diversity in Ageing, Dementia Australia, La Trobe University, Rock Solid Marketing, Sunraysia Community Health Services, Thorne Harbour Country, and University of Tasmania’s Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre.

Addressing Gaps in Dementia Care

GreenConnect was created to address critical gaps in existing dementia care services, particularly in rural and regional areas. Traditional respite care often falls short for individuals living in the early to mid-stages of dementia, who benefit from active engagement and meaningful experiences. Inspired by the therapeutic potential of green spaces, our project incorporates nature-based activities to enhance the quality of life for both individuals living with dementia and their carers. Our research, including international models and local consultations, highlighted the need for this innovative approach.

A Nature-Based Approach to Respite Care

Offering a unique alternative to conventional aged care facilities, GreenConnect integrates nature into our respite programs to:

  • Provide inclusive, nature-based respite care tailored to individual needs.

  • Enhance the quality of life for people with dementia and their carers.

  • Reduce carer stress through engaging and supportive activities.

  • Address disparities in dementia care in rural communities.

Activities include guided nature walks, gardening, art and creativity sessions, and outdoor relaxation events. These are designed to stimulate the senses, foster social connections, and provide meaningful engagement within dementia-inclusive settings.

Early Successes and Community Impact

Since launching, GreenConnect has significantly impacted participants’ lives. Feedback highlights the effectiveness of our approach, with caregivers noting improved mood and wellbeing. For example, a caregiver from Bendigo shared that a day trip to a lavender farm greatly enhanced her loved one’s mood and her own sleep quality. Such positive feedback underscores the project’s success.

Our commitment to stakeholder engagement has been crucial. By incorporating feedback from people with dementia, carers, and cultural groups, we ensure our services are responsive and inclusive. Activities such as a visit to the Great Stupa and Atisha Centre in Bendigo, have fostered cultural appreciation and community connection.
