Dementia Action Week Morning Tea at GrowAbility Nursery

In celebration of Dementia Action Week, GreenConnect Dementia Respite participants gathered under gloriously sunny skies at GrowAbility Native Nursery in Mildura on Tuesday 17 September. This special morning tea is part of the group’s monthly get-togethers, which take place on the third Tuesday of each month.

A Welcoming Gathering

The event brought together a mix of seven people living with dementia, their seven carers, a Care Friend, a participant’s daughter, and the Mildura Respite Care Coordinator (RCC), Kaye Matthews. The group spent time in the nursery’s sunlit gardens, introducing new members and enjoying the beautiful spring weather. They later moved indoors to the “Walkers Place” meeting room for morning tea.

Morning Tea and a Guest Speaker

Participants indulged in a delicious spread, featuring gourmet sandwiches, locally-made Italian biscuits, and house-made banana and macadamia nut cake with lemon thyme icing. Guest speaker Di Coulbourn, from the Rights Information and Advocacy Centre (RIAC) in Mildura, provided valuable insights on free support and advocacy services available at RIAC. Di answered questions from the group and distributed information packs for attendees to take home.

Several members of the group praised RIAC’s services, especially in helping with administrative tasks that often fall to carers.

Upcoming Gathering at the Australian Inland Botanic Gardens

The next GreenConnect Dementia Respite morning tea will be held on Tuesday 15 October, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Australian Inland Botanic Gardens in Mourquong, NSW. The morning will include scones with jam and cream, followed by a tractor train ride through the gardens, led by the garden volunteers.
