A Day of Discovery and Delight: GreenConnect Outing to Jirrahlinga Wildlife Sanctuary

On a crisp and bright day, the GreenConnect Dementia Respite Project team organised a memorable outing for people with dementia and their carers to the Jirrahlinga Wildlife Sanctuary, nestled deep in the serene bushland near Chewton. This sanctuary, known for its diverse array of Australian wildlife, provided an enriching and engaging experience for all who attended.

Close Encounters with Nature

Upon arriving at Jirrahlinga, the group was warmly welcomed by the sanctuary’s knowledgeable and friendly keepers. These passionate guides led our participants through a series of animal encounters that were both educational and delightful. The excitement was palpable as everyone had the chance to handle a blue tongue lizard and a bearded dragon, marvelling at their unique textures and calm demeanour. A particular thrill for many was the opportunity to gently stroke a viper, an experience that sparked a mix of awe and curiosity.

Dot, one of our enthusiastic participants, found great joy in exploring the aviaries, home to a vibrant collection of bird species. Each aviary was alive with colour and song, capturing Dot’s attention and bringing a bright smile to her face.

Meeting the Sanctuary’s Residents

One of the highlights of the day was meeting the sanctuary’s resident female wombat. Though she was a bit grumpy, being in season, her charming demeanour won everyone over, and we were fortunate to stroke her and observe her endearing habits.

However, the true stars of the visit were the dingoes. These magnificent creatures left a lasting impression, especially on Marg, who was captivated by Cairo, a particularly soft and gentle dingo. Marg couldn’t help but express her amazement at their softness and the variety of colours they came in. The keepers’ deep respect and affection for the dingoes were evident, making the encounter even more special.

A Perfect End to a Wonderful Day

The adventure concluded with a stop at the Green Folly Café. Here, participants enjoyed toasted sandwiches and hot drinks, providing the perfect opportunity to relax and reflect on the day’s experiences. The café’s warm ambiance and delicious fare were the ideal end to a day filled with discovery and connection.

Reflections on the Experience

The outing to Jirrahlinga Wildlife Sanctuary was more than just a visit; it was a chance for our participants to engage with the natural world in a meaningful and tactile way. The joy of touching and interacting with the animals, the shared laughter, and the tranquillity of the bushland setting made for a truly enriching experience.

At GreenConnect, we believe in creating opportunities that bring joy, connection, and a sense of wonder to the lives of people with dementia and their carers. This visit to Jirrahlinga exemplified our commitment to providing memorable and supportive experiences for our community.

We look forward to many more adventures and to continuing our mission of fostering connection and discovery through such meaningful outings.
