Morning Tea at Walkers Place: A Day of Connection and Tranquility

GreenConnect Mildura participants enjoyed a heartwarming gathering at the growAbility Nursery on 24 November. The event brought together new and familiar faces for a morning of connection, nature, and delicious refreshments.

A Warm Welcome in a Serene Setting

The day began in the sunny outdoor garden, where attendees were seated around a beautiful eucalyptus slabbed table shaded by trees. The tranquil surroundings created a perfect atmosphere for introductions, as six new participants were welcomed into the group.

Morning Tea in Walkers Place

The gathering moved indoors to the charming Walkers Place meeting room for a carefully curated morning tea. Guests enjoyed mixed sandwiches, homemade organic lemon and olive oil cake, organic blueberry and salted caramel bliss balls, rice crackers, and hummus dip. This comforting routine provided a safe space for participants living with dementia to engage in meaningful conversations and feel included.

Supporting Carers Through Connection

While participants socialised, their carers found time to relax and connect. Sharing stories, experiences, and mutual support, carers appreciated the opportunity to engage with others who understand their journey.

Nature, Sunshine, and Native Plants

The sunny weather encouraged everyone to spend time outdoors, exploring the nursery’s expansive rows of native plants. These plants, lovingly tended by the clients of the Christie Centre, are made available for sale to the public, adding a meaningful purpose to their care. One participant shared, “I even purchased a flowering plant!” The natural setting provided a calming and enjoyable experience for all.

Overwhelmingly Positive Feedback

The event received glowing reviews from participants and carers alike:

  • “My family member didn’t really want to come to his first GreenConnect Dementia outing but really enjoyed himself and chatted all the way home.”

  • “All really lovely people in this not-so-lovely club we find ourselves in.”

  • “Loved meeting new people and not having to explain our situation.”

  • “Beautiful day amongst nature and sunshine.”

  • “What a joy for us to come along. Thanks again.”

Building Community and Belonging

The GreenConnect Dementia Respite Project continues to create meaningful experiences that blend community, nature, and a sense of belonging. This morning tea at Walkers Place is another example of how the project supports people living with dementia and their carers, fostering connection and shared joy in a safe and tranquil environment.
