GreenConnect Dementia Respite Empowers Carers with Virtual Reality Experience

GreenConnect Dementia Respite recently received an exciting opportunity from Dementia Australia to enhance carers' knowledge of dementia through a cutting-edge program using virtual reality technology. The program, known as EDIE for family and carers (Educational Dementia Immersive Experience), allows carers to experience the world through the eyes of those they care for who have been diagnosed with dementia.

Five carers in Mildura recently participated in this innovative program, donning virtual reality goggles to embark on a meaningful, virtual journey. The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many reporting they gained a new perspective and a deeper understanding of dementia.

One participant shared, “It felt very real to walk in the footsteps of those they provide care for.” The immersive nature of the experience allowed carers to appreciate the unique challenges faced by each individual with dementia. This deeper understanding led to insights on important strategies they could implement at home to create a more dementia-friendly environment, enhance safety, and improve communication with their loved ones.

Several carers expressed their intent to engage the support of Allied Health professionals for home assessments and plan to make changes based on expert recommendations. The program also highlighted the services and supports offered by Dementia Australia, including the National Dementia Helpline, which participants found invaluable.

Kaye Matthews, Respite Care Coordinator with GreenConnect Dementia Respite, reported, “Participants not only gained practical insights but also a richer understanding of the daily realities faced by those with dementia. The program's experiential approach was key to this deeper comprehension.”

The success of the EDIE program in Mildura demonstrates the potential of virtual reality technology in enhancing dementia care, providing carers with essential tools and knowledge to better support their loved ones.
